Leading Yourself First

Module 2 of 2 · 12 min

What you model, others copy

If you send messages at 11pm, your team learns the hours. If you never take leave, they learn that leave is for people who are not serious. Culture is set far more by what senior people do than by what wellbeing policies say.

This cuts both ways, which is the good news. Visibly protecting your own recovery gives permission that no policy can. Saying "I'm switching off now, this can wait until Monday" out loud is a leadership act.

It also means being honest in proportion. You do not need to disclose everything, but pretending to be tireless costs you the trust of anyone who can see otherwise. "This week has been heavy, here's how I'm handling it" is both human and steady.

Choose one thing you will change in what you model this week — a message you will schedule rather than send, a break you will take visibly, a limit you will name out loud. One is enough.

The one thing to take

Teams copy behaviour, not policy. What you model becomes the permission others use.

Quick check

You tell your team to protect their evenings, then email at 11pm. What do they learn?

Try this

Model one thing visibly

  1. 1.Choose one habit you want the team to feel allowed to have.
  2. 2.Do it where they can see it this week.
  3. 3.Say one sentence about why, without moralising.

Which of your own habits is your team most likely copying right now?
