Building Everyday Resilience

Module 3 of 3 · 7 min

When you cannot switch off

Unfinished work follows us home because the mind keeps open loops alive to make sure they are not forgotten. It is a helpful instinct doing its job at an unhelpful hour.

The reliable fix is to give the loop somewhere else to live. Write the open items down — a short list, tomorrow's first action next to each. The mind lets go far more easily once it trusts something else is holding the information.

If thoughts still arrive at night, try answering them once, briefly and kindly: "Noted. Nothing useful can happen at 2am. It's on the list." Then return attention to your breathing rather than arguing with the thought.

Recovery is not a reward for having finished. There is no version of this work that finishes. Take it as maintenance, the way you would service a car you intend to keep driving.

The one thing to take

An unfinished thought keeps the system on. Park it somewhere trusted.

Quick check

Your mind keeps replaying work at night. What tends to help most?

Try this

The parking page

  1. 1.List everything still circling, without sorting it.
  2. 2.Give each item one next step and when you will do it.
  3. 3.Close the page and leave it closed until then.

Which single open loop is costing you the most sleep right now?
