Building Everyday Resilience

Module 2 of 3 · 7 min

Small and often beats big and rare

People bank on the holiday. Two weeks of relief, then back to the same pace and the same erosion. Resilience is built more reliably by short daily recovery than by rare large blocks of it.

Aim for micro-recovery: five minutes between meetings with your eyes off a screen, lunch away from your desk, a short walk in daylight, a real conversation with no agenda. These are unglamorous and they compound.

Guard them like meetings, because otherwise they become the first thing sacrificed. If it is not in the day somewhere, it will not happen by goodwill.

Choose one micro-recovery slot and put it in tomorrow's calendar before you close this module.

The one thing to take

Frequent small recovery beats rare big recovery. Leave is not a strategy.

Quick check

Why does relying on annual leave to recover tend to fail?

Try this

Two anchored micro-breaks

  1. 1.Pick two fixed points in your day — after a standing meeting, before lunch.
  2. 2.Attach five minutes of something restorative to each.
  3. 3.Keep them for the rest of the week before adding more.

Which two points in your day could carry a five-minute break most reliably?
