Building Everyday Resilience

Module 1 of 3 · 6 min

Rest is not recovery

Lying on the couch scrolling is rest. It stops you doing more. It does not necessarily restore you. Recovery is what actually replenishes: things that engage you differently, absorb your attention, or reconnect you with people and your body.

This is why a weekend can pass without you feeling any better. Nothing bad happened, but nothing restorative happened either. The tank was never refilled — only left alone.

Recovery is specific to what depleted you. A day of talking to people is repaired by quiet, not by socialising. A day alone at a screen is repaired by company and movement.

What genuinely refills you? Write three things. Be honest rather than aspirational, and keep them small enough to happen on a Tuesday.

The one thing to take

Stopping is not the same as recovering. Recovery replaces what was actually spent.

Quick check

You are mentally drained after a day of decisions. Which is genuine recovery?

Try this

Match the recovery to the cost

  1. 1.Name what today drained most: body, attention, or emotions.
  2. 2.Choose one recovery that speaks to that specific cost.
  3. 3.Give it fifteen protected minutes.

What do you usually reach for to recover, and does it actually work?
