The cognitive couch versus the cognitive gym
Cognitive offloading is not new and it is not wrong. We have always outsourced memory and arithmetic to notebooks, calculators and search. What is different now is the target and the dose: today's tools can absorb judgement, synthesis and reasoning — the higher-order thinking that defines professional work. That is a different thing to hand over, and worth handing over deliberately.
Same tool, two very different postures. On the cognitive couch, AI does the thinking and you accept the output. It is comfortable and fast, and your thinking gets less and less exercise. In the cognitive gym, AI creates more thinking, not less: you pressure-test your reasoning, generate options you then judge, learn faster, reach further than you could alone. The effort moves, it does not disappear.
The aim of this whole course is one line: not to use less AI, but to move from the couch to the gym.
Do the audit, privately. Split your AI use from the last week into two columns. Couch moments: you accepted the output and skipped the thinking. Gym moments: AI made you think harder or reach further than you could alone. Most people find they live mostly on the couch. That honest starting point is the entire value of the exercise.
